Why pilot lights die here, and what we actually check

Most dead pilots are not broken parts. They are blocked orifices. Spider webs are the usual culprit. The spiders are drawn to mercaptan, the odorant in natural gas. They nest inside the pilot tube over summer. So the first failure of the season is almost always a cleaning job, not a parts job.

Second cause: the house got tighter. New windows, spray foam in the rim joist. A standing pilot shares its air with every exhaust appliance. Light the pilot, then run the kitchen hood and the dryer together. If the flame leans or lifts, the problem is depressurization, not the fireplace.

Third: water. Prefab fireplaces sit in framed chases with sheet metal caps. Those caps rust at the seams and drip straight down the flue. Water lands on the pilot assembly. Look for rust streaks on the burner pan and white mineral crust on the pilot hood.

We meter thermopile output twice, open and under load. A sensor that reads fine idle and collapses when the valve pulls is the common quiet failure. We check the wall switch and its wire run too. Long runs of thin bell wire eat millivolts.

Obsolete valves are the one case where repair is a waste of your money.
