The pilot lights. You let go of the knob. It dies. Or the burner runs ten minutes, then quits. Or the glass has gone milky and the logs look sooty. These are maintenance symptoms, not dead appliances. Most trace back to a dirty flame sensor or a starved pilot orifice.

Here is the mechanism. A thermopile makes its own small voltage from pilot heat. Soot, oxidation, and spider webbing in the orifice shrink that flame. The flame stops wrapping the sensor tip. Voltage sags, the valve closes, and it looks electrical. Cleaning the pilot assembly and the hood often restores it. Corroded wall-switch splices under the firebox do the same thing.

Local wrinkle: many gas log sets here sit in open masonry fireplaces with clay tile liners, some from the 1920s through the 1950s. That damper should be clamped open. In tightened-up houses, a cold flue reverses and gas odor drifts into the room. Shared or orphaned furnace flues make that worse.

Prefab chases rust at the chase cover. Water runs down and pits the burner pan. On sealed direct-vent units, the gasket rope must reseat or the glass fogs again.

Check it yourself first: is the pilot flame blue and steady, and does it touch the sensor?
