Fireplace Cleaning in Prospect Heights, IL

Reading a Prospect Heights stack before anyone sweeps it

Brownstone hearths here were coal pockets. Shallow box, tall narrow throat, no proper smoke chamber. Burning cordwood in one pushes smoke at your face. The firebox was never sized for splits.

Count the chimney pots on your roof. Then count fireplaces inside. The numbers rarely agree. Flues got abandoned, rerouted, or plastered over during parlor-floor conversions. Walls between them are a single wythe of brick. When that joint opens, two flues become one.

Many shafts are corbelled brick, parged inside, never tile lined. The parge sheds in flakes. Flakes bury the smoke shelf. Aggressive brushing strips more coating off. We look first with a camera and decide whether brushing helps or harms.

Sealed stacks hold pigeon nests, not creosote. Starlings get in through missing pots. Odor peaks in August humidity with the AC pulling downward. That smell reads as mold to most people. It usually is not.

Check whether your boiler or water heater vents into the same masonry. That is common in these buildings. It changes everything about the inspection. Logistics matter too. Bulkhead access is one factor. A shared party wall sits at the roofline. Co-op and HOA boards often want notice before anyone goes up.
